Stream restoration work was completed on the Sleeping Dog Ranch during the fall of 2008. Before and after pictures appear to the left.  The project was a success as stated by a Trout Headwaters case study.  The results from the report stated the following:  The final design resulted in restoration and enhancement of nearly six acres of wetland by dip-only excavation; restoration of 4,500 linear feet of Cebolla Creek; and construction of 4,000 linear ft. of new stream channel to restore an appropriate and stable geomorphology.  Normal geomorphic functions including sediment transport, pool formation, and nutrient transport. Completion of this project actively benefits the health of aquatic and terrestrial resources on the property and also benefits water quality and floodplain function for downstream and neighboring properties. » More: Stream Restoration on Sleeping Dog Ranch

The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford’s Said Business School has published an excellent article entitled “Blended Value Investing: Innovations in Real Estate.”

This article defines Blended Value Investing as investment that focuses not only on meeting defined financial return targets, but on preserving and creating ecological conservation value as well.  The paper focuses specifically on Blended Value Investing in real estate, and begins by listing the vehicles available to invest in such properties.  These vehicles are niche-individual deals, funds, and a marketplace.  Since much ecological and conservation-based real estate investment involves large tracts of land that trade infrequently, niche deals and funds provide the best way to access this kind of investment.

The Howard Ranch

Chalk up another victory for the high country trout of the Northern Rockies – a premier ranch holding in Colorado‘s famed San Juan Mountain Range has been acquired by a conservation minded group with the primary focus of restoring and improving a once thriving wild trout fishery. Historically operated as a cattle and hay ranch since the early 1900′s, the +/- 307 acre Howard Ranch has been neglected for all purposes aside from maximizing value for cattle and hay production. The high country fishing treasure, Cebolla Creek traverses the ranch for approximately 2 miles along the property’s northern boundary.
